Engen has reinforced its commitment to safe, efficient and more sustainable fuel distribution with the addition of 30 new lower-emission trucks to its national fleet. The investment forms part of the company’s ongoing Own Fleet Lifecycle Management Programme, aimed at enhancing operational resilience, improving safety standards and reducing environmental impact across its logistics network.

The new Euro V fuel-specification vehicles are designed to support both short and long-haul fuel distribution. They incorporate advanced engine management systems, improved fuel-efficiency technology and emissions-reduction solutions that contribute to cleaner exhaust output and enhanced reliability.
Les Moodley, General Manager: Operations at Engen, says the investment reflects Engen’s disciplined and forward-looking approach to operational excellence. “Our fleet plays a critical role in ensuring reliable fuel supply across South Africa. This investment future-proofs our transport operations through smarter technology, enhanced safety systems and lower emissions, while maintaining the high standards our customers and partners expect from Engen”
“By continuously renewing and optimising our fleet, we are strengthening supply chain resilience and reinforcing our commitment to responsible, efficient operations,” adds Moodley
Lower emissions and improved efficiency
A key feature of the new trucks is the integration of Euro V emissions technology supported by Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems and AdBlue. These systems significantly reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions while allowing engines to operate at optimal performance levels.
Jason Heath, General Manager: Lubricants at Engen, highlights the role of advanced fluids and emissions solutions in supporting performance and durability.
“Modern engine technology demands equally advanced solutions. AdBlue and high-performance lubricants contribute to reduced emissions, improved fuel efficiency and extended engine life. This investment reflects how Engen integrates technology, products and operational expertise to deliver more sustainable transport outcomes without compromising performance,” says Heath.
Advanced safety and risk management
The new vehicles are equipped with comprehensive driver-assist and risk-mitigation technologies, including electronic braking systems, stability control, traction management and predictive cruise control. These features enhance vehicle stability, reduce driver fatigue and improve safety under demanding operating conditions.
The fleet also incorporates Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), using AI-powered cameras and sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings in real time. Features such as automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and collision warnings help prevent incidents before they occur.
To further strengthen operational oversight, Engen has installed a sophisticated In-Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS) across the fleet. The system provides real-time visibility of vehicle performance and driver behaviour, monitoring elements such as:
- Vehicle location and route tracking
- Speed, harsh braking and rapid acceleration
- Engine performance and idling time
- Driving hours and fatigue indicators
- Safety events and incident alerts
Each vehicle is fitted with multiple internal and external cameras, providing 360-degree visibility and enabling real-time fatigue detection. AI-driven systems analyse driver alertness and vehicle behaviour, issuing alerts where potential risks are identified. This layered safety approach enhances accountability, reduces operational risk and supports compliance with best-practice transport standards.
Lifecycle-led fleet management
Jaco Henning, Engen Procurement Category Head: Transport & Products, says the acquisition aligns closely with Engen’s structured lifecycle strategy.
“Our Own Fleet Lifecycle Management Programme spans acquisition, operation, maintenance and replacement to ensure maximum value throughout a vehicle’s lifespan,” explains Henning.
“These trucks were selected based on stringent technical, safety and efficiency criteria. Their advanced systems enable a shift towards predictive maintenance, improving uptime while reducing long-term operating costs and emissions.”
Supporting national partnerships and ESG commitments
Adding a distinctive national element, the new trailers carry Springbok branding — reflecting Engen’s proud sponsorship of SA Rugby and its longstanding connection to South African communities.
The fleet expansion also supports Engen’s broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments by reducing transport emissions, improving safety standards and ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory requirements.
As Engen continues to invest in smarter, safer and more sustainable logistics solutions, the new fleet stands as a tangible demonstration of how strategic infrastructure investment underpins operational excellence, environmental responsibility and long-term business performance.
